'Fugly' : Movie Review

Cast: Jimmy Shergill, Mohit Marwah, Vijender Singh, Kiara Advani, Arfi Lamba, Kunika

Direction: Kabir Sadanand

I can still remember a quote from an article dating back to 2008 stating that, "Film-making is not rocket science because latter is rather easy, and undoubtedly these words are true till their core. Because had film making been that easy then probably every movie, coming out of the cine manufacturing units of tinsel town would have been a master piece. And alas, this decree genuinely holds true in showbiz. Another unfortunate thing pertaining to our Industryvalaa's is that, whenever they witness any cine design or genre triumphing at the BO they off the cuff start abrading it till the extent it looses all its luster.

Fugly Movie

Now so seem to be the case with bromance and youth centricism which have turned into one of the most desirable cine-suite for our Bollywooders, who have viewed this in-vogue cine mantra excelling in the recent past, in the form of cine spectacles like "Rang De Basanti", "Shaitaan", "Fukrey" and many more. But as they say that, "no two snow crystals are alike" so seems to be true for the fate of the movie belonging to this ilk. Now the recent cine offering which has come out cruising with the oars of bromance and youth-centricism in cine arena is Akshay Kumar's productional venture "Fugly", which is circumscribed around four friends whose lives turn into a pandemonium when they have an sacrilegious tryst with a rapscallion cop.

This brain child of Kabir Sadanand penned by Rahul Handa and starring Jimmy Shergill, Mohit Marwah, Vijender Singh, Kiara Advani, Arfi Lamba, Kunika opened with a decent occupancy of around 37 percent at the multiplexes (probably because of the notions which founded a place in the psyche of cineasts after "Fukrey", and "Rang De Basanti").

Anyhow let's edify you about the plot of "Fugly". Rooted in the boulevards of Delhi and NCR, narration of "Fugly" is about four friends Dev (Mohit Marwah), Gaurav (Vijender Singh), Aditya (Arfi Lamba) and Devi (Kiara Advani) who are happy in their sphere of life, but at the same time have their own set of dreams too. But their fleeting dreams hit a road block when they have an unholy date with a corrupt cop R.S. Chautala (Jimmy Shergill), who hectors them to frame them in a murder case. So what follows next do these fantastic four succeed in liberating from the claws of ruthless Chautala or succumb to the atrocious jactitation? To know watch "Fugly".

Fugly Vijender Singh

Well, in the absence of an original or imaginative cine idea at its core, there remains nothing much to say about the script of "Fugly". But yes one thing which deserves a special mention is the magnanimity of story writer Rahul Handa for showing a genuine catholicity in purloining the story ideas from past youth-centric movies like "Rang De Basanti", "Shaitaan" and even "Fukrey".

Though when aforementioned cine flicks made it to big screen they fetched some really laudable results for themselves because of some very obvious reasons, but unfortunately things boomerang for "Fugly" which throughout its run time keeps you giving those Deja Vu pangs. Undoubtedly the script of "Fugly" tries very hard to be faithful and edgy, but with a subliminal quality and quantity of everything it, it falls off from the edge. Be it that second rate humor or circumstantial thrill, everything makes you feel like being in a vicious circle. In fact I don't have any pang of guilt in saying that from the very first frame till the culmination, even a laymen can correlate the visual sequences of "Fugly" to those which had been there in its aforementioned predecessors.

What further bedevil your nous is the codswallop and tommyrot screenplay. Although as soon as the movie takes off it portends you about something jovial or at-least entertaining in the offering. But with every single frame passing by, the execution thoroughly deteriorates with entire flow of the narration staggering irredeemably. Soon after the onset your expectations about Fugly's being a joy ride come down shattering, but with the advent of a thrilling twist you start seeing it from a different perspective, but even that whiff vanishes within no time and you are left with that monotonous and rancorous cine proceeding in front of you. So in nut shell with a befuddled flow of narration with copious flaws in it comprising of insipid humor and dull thrill, even screenplay of Sanjay Kumar fails in emerging as grace saver for "Fugly". And same holds true for the cinematography of Milind Jog.

Editing of Shounok Ghosh is thoroughly below the required level, and man in chair has totally failed in examining and winnowing the redundant chunks.

Contrary to the overall spirit of the movie music of "Fugly" comprising of tracks like Fugly , 'Dhup chik', 'Dhuaan' and 'Banjaarein' is appealing.

As far as performances are concerned then even on this front movie's director Kabir Sadanand has failed miserably in extracting best out of his protagonists. Be it ace boxer Vijender Singh or newbies Mohit Marwah, Kiara Advani and Arfi Lamba performance each one of them falls within the span of below average to average. Although the newbies performing on the big screen at times try to bring in some vigor on the celluloid by their performances, but all goes in vein because of ill-sketched character traits. On one hand where Mohit looks oblivious about desired expressions, Vijender looks like relying excessively upon his "Haryaane Ka Chora" avatar, whereas Arfi Lamba tries hard to do justice to his character, but he too flunks in doing so. On the the other hand contrary to the performances of these male protagonists, Kiaraa is impressive in her maiden attempt. Jimmy Shergill plays his character with utmost honesty, but due to indistinctly defined character fails in leaving any noteworthy mark.

Fugly Actress

To sum up, despite generously purloining from some of the best movies of their times like "Rang De Basanti", "Shaitaan" and "Fukrey", Fugly turns out to be an absolute sub-standard entertainer. And in the absence of anything pleasing in it, from commencement till culmination it compels you tolerate those Deja Vu pangs. So for this genuinely FUGLY, messy and disappointing cine fuss I am going ahead with one and a half star out of five. And would like to recommend that go watch it if you really want to traumatize yourself.
